I have had to, recently, attend a class given by the Army on Casualties and loss. It is part of the classes for Level 2 for AFTB. I also had a separate class during FRG Leadership training about it as well.
There are many things that I knew about already and allot of things I already had in place, but there was something that I didn't even think about..
I learned that my soldier has to write a letter and put it in his file that states who has to be contacted if I where to die while he is deployed. That there has to be a POC who can be at my home within 48 hours of my death to take care of my children until he can get home from wherever he is deployed too. That if he does not have this simple little piece of paper in his file when he deploys, and I should die, that the children would be turned over to the state.
It is a rather sobering thought really. I have to update my will and he has to update his. Our insurance is updated as well as the children’s and should something happen to him while he is deployed I know that a care team will come to my home and offer assistance to me for as long as I need it within reason.
I have learned that there are certain funds and things that will be turned over to me in case of his death, and that I will be given x amount of $ for funeral arrangements and so forth.
It was just really sobering to learn all of this within the space of an hour. It certainly gives you a great deal to think about.

Both are very serious thoughts ... thoughts that most of us try our best to ignore and avoid ... until its too late.
